Filthy Razor Blades, Rusty Scissors and even ordinary Nail Clippers can do more harm than good

Posted on March 7, 2014 at 6:36 PM
Did you know that some adults have been using scissors of various sizes, types, and conditions (rusty, dirty, sharp or even dull and blunt) to cut toenails?

And untrained and unsteady hands handled used, filthy razor blades (designed for shaving body or facial hair) to deal with calluses and corns on the feet!

Shocking??? But it is happening.

Together with the common nail clippers, the use of the domestic scissor which is designed for cutting either hair, paper, cloth, plastic, or craft materials etc. may seem fine to people, especially the untrained or those whose judgement, suppleness and eyesight have been slowly stiffened or eroded  either by ageing or just plain bad habits .

But what people fail to realise is that using the wrong, unsterilised or rusty implements can do more harm than good.

First, filthy, rusty tools can cause or introduce infection or tetanus to feet. Both scissors and razor blades can easily cause wounding or injury.

Second, scissors cut toenails unevenly and increases the risk of having jagged or sharp edges, especially at both ends of the toenails where the sulci (plural of sulcus or furrow of the nail bed) are. If these happens and is left in that state, it can cause  the jagged or sharp edges of the toenails to start ingrowing, putting pressure or digging or stabbing into the skin. The pressure exerted by the ingrowing toenails eventually pierces the skin and causes wounding. These leads to pain and inflammation-- the body’s initial response to an assault by the sharp toenails and introduction of pathogens into the cut skin or wound. The skin is one of the body’s natural defences or physical barriers against harmful bacteria (or pathogens) or infection.

Third, to the untrained, the toenails may have been cut too little or too short, often asymmetrical to the shape of the toes. These can also cause toenails to bend and ingrow, again digging in or putting unnecessary pressure on the skin and ending up with complications above mentioned. The presence of small corns, especially adjacent to the sulcus area of the small toes (the feet’s fifth digits) can also further complicate the problem.

Lastly, the ordinary nail clippers are not designed to cut thick nails, especially the big toes or halluces (plural of hallux). It will struggle and cut rough and messy.

This is the reason why AAA Foot Care is helping people avoid these types of problems by educating them (i.e. through foot health promotion) and providing them essential and routine foot and toenail services. The foot health practitioner is trained and has the appropriate, specialist and sterilised professional kit to maintain and keep feet healthy, which includes trimming, shaping and smoothening the toenails. This is a much more superior alternative to DIY (do-it-yourself) disasters which can cause pain, inconvenience and consequently end in costly specialist or medical interventions or a stay in the hospital.
